Born in Des Moines, Iowa, Dr. Ginkel learned the value of hard work while growing up on their family ranch in Alpine, California. By observing his father, a family physician, Dr. Ginkel learned the value of health, exercise and hard work throughout his younger years. This knowledge of the value of a healthy lifestyle, combined with his talent in the biological sciences and the example set by his father would later translate into an interest in Medicine. While attending San Diego State University, Dr. Ginkel earned a bachelors degree in zoology, while also fulfilling his pre-med requirements. Dr. Ginkel went on to get his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine. Dr. Ginkel then went on to complete his residency and fellowship at the University of California, Irvine.
After attaining his undergraduate degree, Dr. Ginkel attended St. Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. He then completed his Internal Medicine internship and residency, and later his Cardiology fellowship at the University of California, Irvine. After his Internal Medicine training, he was asked to stay as Chief Resident at Long Beach Veterans Affairs Hospital in Long Beach, California.
In 1997, Dr. Ginkel began his professional career as an Interventional Cardiologist for Pacific Cardiovascular Associates, located at Long Beach Memorial Hospital in Long Beach, California. In 1999, he moved to Ventura, California where he built a very successful practice. In addition to becoming a partner in Cardiology Associates Medical Group, he served as both CCU and Catheterization Laboratory Director. After nearly ten years, he and his family relocated to Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey, Michigan. While in Northern Michigan, he was instrumental in the merger of the two independent Cardiology groups. He also gained additional skills in complex coronary intervention, and was introduced to the endovascular treatment of peripheral artery and venous disease. After several very long and cold winters, he made the decision to return to California, where he founded Midcoast Cardiovascular Associates and Midcoast Vein. Dr. Ginkel has vast experience in complex coronary interventions, and has performed over 2,000 pacer and ICD implantations.
